Range at Target Energy/Velocity
What is RTEV?
The instant the pellet leaves the muzzle it begins losing velocity and kinetic energy to air resistance.
Drag continuously retards the pellet until it arrives at the target. Therefore, for any combination of muzzle velocity, pellet ballistic coefficient, and desired terminal velocity (e.g., for adequate lethality in the chosen quarry), there is a maximum range beyond which the desired velocity will no longer be available.
Any attempt to shoot farther than this maximum range will result in inadequate on-target energy.
This calculator estimates that maximum range for both energy and velocity in English and Metric units.
